Equine: A Sweet Script for Creative Projects

Working on a branding project for a small, locally owned café recently, I found myself scrolling through my font library, searching for something that felt warm and inviting. The space was cozy, the menu had a rustic charm, and the owner wanted a visual identity that felt personal and approachable. That’s when I stumbled upon Equine.

Equine is a handwritten display font with a soft, friendly personality. Its curves are gentle, its strokes feel handcrafted, and there's a sense of playfulness that makes it stand out. It's not overly ornate or complex—it’s simple, yet expressive. This kind of font can be tricky to use in branding because it needs to balance charm with clarity, but Equine manages to do both.

I started by testing it on a logo draft. The café’s name was straightforward, so I wanted a font that could add character without overpowering the message. Equine worked beautifully as a headline, giving the brand a human touch while still maintaining a level of professionalism. It wasn’t too casual, nor was it too rigid—just right for a place that values authenticity.

As I moved into packaging design, I experimented with Equine on label stickers and coffee bags. The font’s organic flow made it ideal for short phrases like “Handcrafted Daily” or “Brewed with Care.” It added a subtle, personal flair that felt genuine, which was exactly what the client wanted. I also used it on social media graphics, where it brought a sense of warmth to posts about new menu items or seasonal drinks.

One thing I noticed early on was how well Equine works as a display font. It shines in headlines, banners, and signage, but it’s not suited for long blocks of text. That’s not a flaw—it’s more of a characteristic. When used appropriately, it adds a unique visual element that draws attention without distracting from the overall design.

For a branding project, consistency is key. I paired Equine with a clean sans serif font for body text, creating a balanced contrast. The script font provided a friendly tone, while the sans serif offered clarity and readability. This pairing worked well across different materials, from business cards to website headers.

Testing a font before committing to a full brand system is always a good idea. I created mockups of shop signs, product labels, and even a homepage hero section to see how Equine would perform in real-world scenarios. It held up well in most cases, but I made sure to adjust spacing and sizing to maintain legibility, especially in smaller formats.

Equine also has a range of styles and alternates, which gave me flexibility in the design process. I used different variations to avoid repetition in larger layouts, ensuring that the font didn’t feel monotonous. The inclusion of ligatures and special characters was a nice touch, making it easier to create polished, professional designs.

When working with clients, I always emphasize the importance of choosing a font that aligns with the brand’s voice. Equine is perfect for businesses that want to convey a sense of warmth, creativity, or whimsy. It’s ideal for wedding invitations, greeting cards, or any design that benefits from a personal, handmade feel. But it also has enough structure to work in more formal contexts, like logos or signage.

From a technical standpoint, Equine is a premium font that comes with multiple file formats, making it easy to integrate into different design workflows. The commercial licensing was straightforward, which is important when working on projects that might require print or digital assets.

Overall, Equine is a versatile and charming typeface that can elevate a variety of design projects. Whether it’s a café, boutique, or creative studio, this font adds a touch of personality that resonates with audiences. It’s not just a font—it’s a tool for storytelling, one that helps brands connect with their customers in a meaningful way.

As I wrapped up the project, I knew that Equine had played a significant role in shaping the brand’s visual identity. It wasn’t just about aesthetics; it was about creating a feeling, a sense of familiarity that made the café feel like home. And that, I think, is the true power of a well-chosen font.
